Why is the top of your nail white?

The top part of your nail that grows away from your finger. Why is the top of your nail white?
That's the part where the new nail is growing- underneath the existing nail. It is white, because it is not laying against the skin, as the rest of the nail is. The skin has blood vessels under it, which tint the skin pink, which is why that part of the nail is pink. If you notice, the end of the nail is white, too, because that is no longer laying on skin. Why is the top of your nail white?
That white cresent is called the lunula and the nail's material, keratin is produced there and therefore the nail grows out from there. It can change color if the nail is diseased or unhealthy.
The pink portion of the nail is covering the skin as well as has nerve attached to it. The white portion is ';dead'; - Please understand it is not attached to the skin and does not have the nerve endings as the pink portion does. As a nail grows the white portion becomes hardened and that is the part of the nail that is the toughest.

It protects the other pink part from becoming injured.
lunula, that is the root of your nail
its the calcium in your nails that does that.
Your nails are made of protein and are clear, the color of pink over your finger tips is made by the flesh under the nails.
It's called a lunala. Here's the wikipedia article on it:

because there is no flesh and no skin sooo there you go =)
The top of the nail is more than likely white considering you can see the pigment of your skin through the bottom half of your nail. Just like if you take a flashlight and hold it up at the bottom of your hand's you can see a red glow, which is the light shining through your skin.
it the dead part like your hair your head as dead ends.
As your nails start to grow, the part that is not on your ';finger'; is white because it is no longer ';attatched'; to your nail. Underneath your nails is a really nasty pinkish-white goo. But your nail is actually white, it's just being discolored by what's underneath your nail.
these are commonly known as the 10-half moons.

i guess if you are ever in the dark, you can use your fingers to shed some light on the situation.
The entire nail is actually all one color; the part of the nail which is attached to your finger looks different because of your flesh underneath which is showing through. The combination of your raw skin underneath and the whitish color of the nail itself produces a different color, which can vary between people depending on the color of their flesh (not necessarily skin color). The part of your nail that grows away from your finger is the actual color of the nail.
The translucent nail is no longer colored by the skin beneath it
Mine are usually black.
that is actually the lunula growing out
blood flow
It is the calcium from your bones. the thicker it gets, the more white it becomes.
because there is no flesh under it.

the whole nail is white but when it is in place ,part of it appears red because of the colour of the tissue underneath it that is full of blood.

thats why you can tell from the colour of ones fingernails if he is anemic ,they will be pale rather than dark pink.
lack of pigment.
